Abstract

This paper represents one of the first attempts to clarify the position, style, functions, and competence of a teacher in individual classes, with their interdependent relationship being stressed and explicated. In order to provide optimal engagement of students while performing and evaluating individual classes, the teacher finds themselves in the subjective position in the initial stage of such classes. With their overall and democratic engagement, the teacher contributes to the development of authenticity of each student’s individuality and to achieving optimal results of learning in the zone of the following development. In the course of an individual class, the teacher assumes numerous functions, such as pedagogical-diagnostic, planning-programming, leader-innovator, and docimologic-evaluational. Furthermore, the teacher assumes other functions as well, such as those regarding mediating and socialising, coordinating and therapeutic acting, and advising, with a view to contributing to the humanisation and inclusiveness of the process of individual classes, as well as more successful realisation of projected outcomes of such classes  The competences necessary for the teacher to successfully plan, prepare, and evaluate  individual classes, in addition to the common ones, are the ones regarding profession in general (pedagogical and psychological) and specific terms (methodological, didactic and methodical). The position, working style, and functions of the teacher in the course of an individual class are interdependent with their competences. The paper also presents a comprehensive programme of professional training for teachers dealing with individual classes. It is based on precisely defined, measurable and projected outcomes, which represent the wanted methodological, didactic, and methodical competences of the teacher.
