Abstract

Activities that are realised with children in preschool institutions are conducted through centres of interest. The number of centres in which children can stay throughout a day varies and it depends upon the goals intended for realization, as well as upon the contents conceived by educators. Placed within these centres is a language centre, along with a mathematical one. Through the aforementioned centres children acquire basic linguistic and mathematical contents.  With regard to the age of students, there are neither recommended texts nor clearly defined criteria for the selection of texts to be read, it is entirely due to an educator’s choice. This research is aimed at determining the criteria upon which educators make a selection of texts facilitating mathematical contents acquisition. The research is a quantitative one,  and the instrument used is a questionnaire, both open-ended and closed-ended. A group of 90 educators, who have filled in the online version of the questionnaire, makes the sample for the research. The results show that these criteria are versatile and that they depend upon personal preferences of an educator. With regard to that, the authors recommend that the aforementioned criteria be more clearly defined.
